Everyone probably harbors a first love deep in their hearts. Those immature times, when we couldn't say we liked someone, and just circled around them.
To me, that was you. It was so long ago that I've forgotten most of it, but the fragments of memories that still remain come back to me, leaving me lost in thought for a while.
The bustle of the street after school on the way to your class, the emotions of going to the stationery store together to decide what to snack on, the curses we'd spit out, trying to pretend it wasn't a big deal when we became more self-conscious about each other after puberty.
Among them, there was one thing that particularly stands out: beer candy. There's no particular story behind it; I think it just came from the fact that we often bought and ate it together.
The carbonation burst on our tongues, and the taste felt like something only adults could enjoy. Beer candies were perfect for our curious and mischievous tastes back then.
Before eating, we'd always taste salty, and we'd clink our candies together, imitating adults. We'd also never forget to pretend to be drunk and make nonsense. It was mostly about things like, "Life is bitter, alcohol is sweet," and "Life isn't easy." Looking back, I can't remember any time as sweet as that.
Time passed, and we entered middle school. Unfortunately, you and I went to different schools, and naturally, we lost touch.
Whiteday Event
In the midst of my busy life, I got a call about a class reunion. I said I'd attend, and when I went that day, you were there too.
I was so happy to see you that I lost track of time as we chatted. We drank real beer, not candy, and reminisced about our childhoods. A lot had changed for us, but we laughed and chatted as if nothing had changed.
After midnight, the alcohol had set in, and we were both flushed. I stopped slurping down my soju and reached for the cider. I couldn't get any drunker. I had something to tell you. I mixed the beer and cider and clinked my glasses with you. Cheers. I drank, wondering how I could be alone with you. It was sweet.
