It was last summer. After the closing ceremony, I returned home and saw a girl in a white dress with blue stripes. I approached her and asked her who she was, but she didn't answer. I thought she was strange.
My mother came home in the evening and introduced herself as her friend's daughter. She said she was staying at my house during the break. I was a little taken aback at first, but I soon forgot about it. More accurately, I was trying to do it. It meant I'd failed.
She seemed to want to get close to me, so she kept coming into my room and pestering me. She often skipped knocking. Every morning, she'd burst in and demand to go outside. In the middle of this sweltering summer. No matter how much I refused, she wouldn't listen. She was incredibly stubborn.
Eventually, after giving in once or twice, she became more persistent, and eventually, I just obeyed without question. It was all just a walk around the neighborhood. If I could just grab an ice cream and hold on, I could live a little.
Anyway, that wasn't the end of it. As I mentioned before, he would often come into my room. He'd often fall asleep while reading on the bed or at the desk. Even though it must have been hot by the window, he was persistent.
Sometimes, on days when he couldn't sleep, he'd chatter beside me while I was drawing. Most of the time, the questions were inscrutable. Things like, "Don't you think we're growing up too fast?" or "Why is it that smelling a familiar scent I can't even remember hurts more than seeing something I miss?" He didn't care whether I paid attention or not.
He was confident and self-possessed in many ways. When I first met him, I thought he was quiet because he didn't respond. But he was actually shy, and he was really talkative. He chattered away... Sometimes, if he didn't want to answer, he'd remain silent even when I spoke to him. Just like when we first met, his clear eyes blinked.
He was a strange kid. I thought he was a little immature and thoughtless. But then again, he surprised me by being more mature and smarter than me. Was he actually quick-witted and pretending not to be? I wondered, but that was all I could think. He didn't answer my questions.
He approached me without hesitation, but he never really gave me his side. Because of that, our relationship was neither friendly nor hostile. As time passed, we naturally bonded.
